Founded in 1855 as a land-grant institution, Michigan State University is a public research university located in East Lansing, Michigan. The university has over 200 academic programs, and offers one of the largest study abroad programs in the country. Michigan State's enrollment of over 46,000 students makes it among the largest universities in the United States. Students have access to a large array of campus activities, including student organizations, a robust Greek system, and a nationally-recognized athletics program.
Michigan State is situated on a sprawling 5,200-acre campus known for its scenic setting. Perched on the banks of the Red Cedar River in East Lansing, MSU's campus consists of nearly 700 buildings which feature numerous styles of architecture. Many historic buildings are located in the North campus area and include Cowles House, the president's official residence, and Beaumont Tower, a carillon clock tower marking the site of College Hall, the original classroom building. Other landmarks include the bronze statue of former president John A. Hannah, and the W. J. Beal Botanical Garden.
