In an effort to increase graduation rates among its students, St. Mary's University in Texas launched the Four-year Pledge program. If students fulfill their responsibilities and are unable to complete the requirements for the degree within four years, the university will provide a grant that will cover tuition and fees for the additional courses that are required to graduate, the school reports in a press release.

St. Mary's Four-year Pledge is the first of its kind in San Antonio, and among only a few in Texas. The school recognizes that the longer a student is enrolled, the more cost that is incurred and long-term earning potential is delayed, the university reports. St. Mary's is seeking to help reduce the cost of higher education, thus lessening the total financial investment required of our students.

"Making a college degree affordable and accessible is only half the battle," said the school's president, Charles L. Cotrell. "Colleges and universities also have a responsibility to do their part to empower and motivate students to graduate in a timely manner so that they can move forward with their future careers and aspirations."

As part of the Four-year Pledge, St. Mary's University promises to provide students with access to up-to-date information so they can monitor their progress.

High school students who are searching for a Christian institution to attend in order to gain a postsecondary education may want to consider enrolling at Messiah College. The school is one of only four Christian colleges in the nation to offer a bachelor of arts in sustainability studies, Messiah reports in a press release.

The humanities- and social sciences-focused degree is designed to emphasize the social, ecological and economic components of sustainable communities. Graduates of this program can be prepared for careers in public service or law. Students who desire a less interdisciplinary and more science-focused study can opt for courses in environmental science or environmental engineering.

The "green movement" began at Messiah more than 40 years ago. In 1971, Man and His Environmental Problems was a required course for all students. Then, in 1981, the Humankind and the Environment course inspired the college's student group, Earthkeepers, to implement a campus-wide recycling initiative.

Today, environmental stewardship efforts at the college include, a robust recycling program, an organic community garden, a student-led composting program and active restoration of the on-campus Yellow Breeches Creek.

In an effort to decrease the high costs that are associated with postsecondary education, a growing number of universities are creating digital textbook initiatives. For example, Virginia State University's (VSU's) Reginald F. Lewis School of Business entered a textbook licensing agreement with Flat World Knowledge - a publisher of college textbooks - in order to provide a business curriculum to students in a digital format that is cost-effective and environmentally sustainable, the school announced in a press release.

The agreement also plays a key role in the business school's "revolution of excellence" goal to implement technologies that remove textbook costs and other obstacles to higher education. Many leading textbooks exceed $200, and students can spend $1,000 or more per year on textbooks. The cost of textbooks is also a major reason that many students drop out of college, according to a report from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

"We are in the business of education and must seek innovative ways to ensure the success of our students, especially during these times of severe budget cuts and economic uncertainty," said Keith T. Miller, VSU President.

Each site license will cost VSU $20 per student per course for digital access to all learning content for the core business curriculum.
