Work It Out: Balancing a Five-Class Semester

I'm not going to lie to you: my first week with five classes was brutal. Besides my new classes being difficult on their own, auditions for the Freshman Musical were this week, so I had to sit behind a table and take notes on the acting and singing abilities of a constant parade of prospective cast members for four hours every night. Obviously, it's something that has to be done, but it made all of the work I had this week nearly impossible. I didn't manage to get anywhere near a decent amount of sleep, but now it's Friday and I have the whole weekend to catch up on sleep and work (not that I'm looking forward to the latter).

Lately, I find myself more and more into running. I mean, I've run mostly every day since the beginning of last summer, but it was always just a part of my daily routine that I had to get done, no matter how much I detested it. I never understood all of the things people said about working out being a stress reliever or a nice break from work. Most of the time, there were a million things I would rather have been doing, but I know how important it is to stay healthy and in shape, so I did it, even though I hated it.

But recently, running has actually started to become for me the remedy for stress that runners always claim it is. I don't really know what changed, but lately I've been running longer and longer distances and going out on runs more than once a day. I haven't really figured it out yet, so all I can say for sure right now is don't give up if you're having trouble establishing a good workout schedule or you don't like working out as much as other people do. It took me nine months to finally enjoy running for its own sake, but now, I'm addicted.

Brandon
My name is Brandon. I graduated from Turpin High School in Cincinnati, Ohio this year. In the fall, I will be a freshman at Harvard University. For the past four years, I've lived the hectic-at-best life of a committed high school student. But even with AP classes, work, and volunteering, I had an unbelievably fun time in high school. I was involved in a variety of extracurriculars - everything from Varsity swim team to Diversity Club. I love acting and singing. I've acted in thirteen plays and musicals from the time I was a freshman. My true passion is foreign language. I've studied Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin in school and explored many others on my own. The math and science classes that I had to forgo in order to accomplish this were unfortunate casualties. Not really. Outside of school, I am an avid moviegoer, as well as a connoisseur of fast food restaurants. I read a good deal and I make sure to spend some time with my cool-as-can-be family. At Harvard, I plan to study Romance languages and literatures and afterward I'd like to go to law school to study international law. One day I hope to be an ambassador or diplomat for the U.S. government so that I can travel to some exciting places.
