Making sure you have everything in order


Checklist for College-Bound Student FinancesThe finances surrounding college are complex, so it’s important to run through one final checklist before you reach your final destination in the fall. Also, be sure to keep copies of all paperwork and pay special attention to any deadlines in order to avoid unpleasant surprises when you arrive on campus. Make sure you do all of the following before you head off to college:

  • Pay housing deposit
  • Accept any college scholarships and find out if they are automatically renewed each year
  • Finalize student loan details, if applicable
  • Plan out a budget for the school year
  • Purchase a computer and any related equipment
  • Make sure all bank accounts are in order
  • Select a bank account that does not charge ATM or monthly transaction fees
  • Take care of any car maintenance
  • Purchase airline tickets, if applicable
  • Send completed section of promissory note to financial aid office
  • Put money aside for books, folders, pens, paper, calculators, and other miscellaneous school-related items
  • Pay registration fees not covered by financial aid
  • Pay tuition deposit and finalize details of payment plan
  • Purchase dorm room necessities (coordinate with roommate, if possible)
  • Make sure your cell phone will work on and around campus; select a new plan or carrier if necessary
  • Apply for a credit card, if necessary
